Water Jet Nozzles for the hopper???

    Hi, I built a river sluse that converts to a high banker, It will have 8ft of gold hog mats and a hopper from South yuba. The hopper will have 1"1\2 pvc shooting from 3 sides and I was wondering what works best for a pressure nozzles for this application. What I have found so far is pressure washer nozzles but will these have enough volume for the flow in the sluse? I was trying to get a fanning nozzles to wash more area than just drilling holes. Any ideas?? thanks for your input.

    I have seen the air hose nozzles (for blowing off your work table, etc...) used in this way. They are brass and can be tapped or screwed into the PVC. Some of the nozzles are adjustable for pattern.

    I've found that getting the water to stay in the hopper a bit longer works great. I don't have spray bars so to speak, but a system with two open end pipes, where the water shoots in from the lower end of the hopper, then the water pressure and a piece of rubber map covering part of the grizzly bars work to flood the upper part of the hopper , before gravity takes over and it runs down to the lower half and into the sluice. this lower pressure greater volume idea causes the water to stay in the box longer and wash the material not just run straight down through the material and through the grizzly. I went this route to avoid plug ups of my spray bars

    I will have to try that simple, cheap solution to the holes getting clogged.

    Hey Joebob, If you are running Gold Hog mats, I don't think the pressure nozzles or just holes drilled in the bar will supply the volume of water needed to keep the mats active, (they require more volume of water than a regular carpet and moss sluice to create the exchange of material for the mats to work properly).

    The best bet is to do what Gold Hog does, or what Kenneth shows in his pic. just open end pvc pointed at the upper end of the box to create the boil effect to tumble and wash rocks and to supply enough volume to make the mats work right.

    Which mats or combination of mats are you running your hi-banker? I am running Keene Miracle mats (used them for the first time at Loud Mine).

    Hey Brad. I am currently using UR(under riffle) mat under the hopper behind the reverse ramp riffle, then alternating Razorback, Scrubber, and Downdraft mats down the sluice.

    I am going to reconfigure them a little this winter when I buy the mats for the 3" dredge I'm building. I am replacing the Downdraft mat with the new Talon mat and replacing most of the Razorback mat with River Hog mats. The reason for this is the Talon and River Hog mats are more aggressive and made for faster/higher water volume. The Razorback and Downdraft work better with slower - moderate water speed.  I made this unit like the Viper, but instead of 12" wide it is only 10" wide, it is 7 1/2' long.    This thing is a monster to run, if I want to push it to it's full capacity it takes at least 3 people to feed it and can run about a ton in less than an hour.

    Thanks again for the input, I just got back from Downieville from a 2 day run. First time running the full 8feet of hog in my HB. I was very impressed with it. I picked up a 3hp 1 1\2" pump form Ebay for $150 Shipped and run it for as long as are arms could shovel gravel. We dug a pit that was 9'x5'x5' between the 2 of us my friend in the pit and I was feed the monster. we haven't done a full clean up but I'll post a pic. My High banker is also a stream slues so I went with a the less aggressive mats. 2 scrubbers on top, 2 razorbacks, 2 bedrocks, 1 razor, 2 bedrocks,1 razor, 2 bedrocks, 1 razor and 3 bedrocks to Finnish. As for my spray nozle I drilled two rows of 1\4" holes on each side and in the middle I made three 1\16" slits that are 1 1\2" wide. It seems to work with the mats good. I could use some more volume but by running at a 7 degree pitch seems to dance and clear good.

    JoeBob; Having worked with Spencer during the design of one of my first Highbanker/Dredges, I understand where you're going.  I'm assuming (and you know where that goes) that you're either 10" or 12" hopper with three windows each side.  I did two 1 1/2" builds.  The first I used Sch 80 pvc positioned, marked for the windows, then drilled out with 1/4" drill bits on angle towards the grizzly.  The marking and planning of the angle and coverage must be thought out of you'll be doing a "do-over"!  Plumbers pipehangers will support the spray arms, the elbows, and the ball valve if you're using one.

    PS: I have 120 foot of 1 1/2 inch (white)firehose layflat hose in inventory, slightly used if you're interested.  I've upgraded to 2 inch on all of my equipment, so the 1 1/2" is in a storage container, along with schedule 80 fittings, pipe and one ball valve.  Email me if discussion is needed.
