Has anyone been to Rock Hound State Park near Deming Arizona?

What is the best time of year to visit?

    Did you find anything?

Gary, do you mean New Mexico? If so get a hold of Geolapidary Museum Rock Shop in Deming, NM. Phone # is (505)-546-4021 they are closed on Wed. They will be able to answer all your questions.            Ron

I was there in late February 2014 and the mid March. I found a geode both times and someone had dug a hole so I panned some of the loose dirt and found a few -100 mesh specks.

OOPPSS! Yes, I mean New Mexico. Major typo. I need to delete this topic and start over. Thanks for the comments. I am getting cabin fever from all the rain and bad weather in Texas and need to get out somewhere.

    Gary,

Rock Hound State park by Demming NM, is a pretty good spot.  There are also many places around the area close by.  Silver City has a few areas that are BLM or Forest service with some state areas.  You can also do some hounding down around Hatchita area.  Locate some of the clubs in the area online they will be of help also.  Arizona has some designated BLM rock hound areas by Duncan and Safford areas.

Glad to help if you head over into Arizona or the area.

Visited Rock Hound State Park last week in Deming NM. I found several types of very good rocks and some broken geodes. I climbed up the side of the mountain almost to the first row of boulders. The temp was about 40 degrees so no snakes or bugs. Another check mark on my list.

    Gary,

New GPAA member here. What kind of rocks did you find in Rockhound state park? Do you recommend a winter time trip to it?

Mostly Jasper and combinations with other minerals I do not remember. Thunder Eggs if you can find them. I suggest going up the ravine to the right of the mountain ridge. It looks like a dried stream bed. Take the trail until it turns to the left. Its rough but not as steep as going up the center section. Definitely go in the Winter and take a camera. The view is great! Good Luck!
