My father taught me this. You get some dirt in your gold pan (a normal pan full ) then you put about 10-15 steel BBs into the dirt and mix it in. The steel BBs are not as heavy as gold but heavier than the dirt. Pan normally until you get your "concentrates" and see how many BBs are left in the pan.
This is a good way to see how much gold you are losing when panning also. My father was a professional gold miner for big companies in California and Nevada. His hobby was prospecting.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me at 17ccramer@gmail.com thanks

    Clyde,

    Sounds like a good idea.

Someone told me of another technique.  Get some lead shot, either shotgun pellets or lead sinker shot.  Flatten it with a hammer, then pan it with some of your dirt.  Either way, you could use very small to larger shot as desired.

I like the idea of flattening the lead so it can't roll.

Another trick.... take the flattened lead and cut into tiny pieces with normal scissors. paint these yellow for visibility. The tinier the better to learn precise panning techniques.  ╦╦Ç
