8 Replies and 2709 Views Wilderness areas in CA - Red Cloud claim  2709  8 Started by  slhurtt@gmail.com Prospecting 1st time near the Red Cloud claim in CA and have seen lots of signs that limit access to the wilderness designated areas. Anyone know the rules concerning prospecting these areas This only effects a small portion of the 160ac claim. Only made one trip out there. Mostly just locating the claim and dig sites. Did some metal detecting for about 2 hours. Wasn't in the right area for that. Did go off claim and explored the original mine quite a bit. BLM has limited some areas. Ma...

11 Replies and 6171 Views Black Sand Dry Wash  6171  11 Started by  lillard2765@hotmail.com While driving around in the AZ desert last week I found a dry wash that had black sand streaks visible from the truck. At night! I had no gold mining equipment since I was there for agates. Used my hands to gather a about half a gallon of the stuff, but there is just too much black sand for my skill level of panning. I see mica and probably chalcopyrite flakes in the pan that I thought was gold at first. The wash empties into a running stream that is known to have placer gold about 4 miles from ...

3 Replies and 3096 Views Desert Prospecting  3096  3 Started by  Tbone112219@gmail.com I am looking into getting out to the desert to do some prospecting. Still pretty new to the hobby. I was wondering what others think or recommend...... I am looking into getting a power sluice and setup a water recirculating system when I go out to the desert. Taking water with me isnt an issue. I was looking at doing this setup because it is a bit cheaper to get and yes i know its more work to setup. A dry washer is a bit more expensive and less setup time to it. I was wondering...

5 Replies and 3057 Views New to prospecting  3057  5 Started by  rocdoc888colorado@gmail.com Hi, I'm new to prospecting and have some equipment (purchased the Gold Rush Nugget Bucket kit) and have some other tools that I've used for gem and mineral collecting. I've also purchased several bags of 'pay dirt' from a couple of vendors, both gotten from Gold Prospectors Ass. magazines that I plan on practicing with my gold pan and the bucket kit. I'm currently working in the Bay area of CA, but my residence is in CO, both good gold producing states. I'm thinking of purchasing either a hig...

4 Replies and 4478 Views Permit guidelines / generally acceptable practices  4478  4 Started by  Mr.briancosta@gmail.com I am very familiar with the rules and regulations of fishing fresh and saltwater so i will try to draw a parallel with those regulations. When i was first getting into fishing i quickly learned that there is a lot to learn from both the regulation guidelines and from other fishermen/women. Wondering if there is similar guidance that can be advised here on the following: -If i have a GPAA mining claim card/permit and am going on a claim to prospect....I know i need my card and mining guide ...

0 Replies and 1484 Views New to Prospecting- Oregon  1484  0 Started by  robertdmcgee@gmail.com I have been going through the prospecting forums for claims in the State of Oregon. By what I have read, there aren't too many and finding very little color to make it worth while. My main concern is the accessibility of the GPAA claims in my State. 2WD vehicle as well, so that has to be taken into consideration as to where I can go. I have panned in SD in the area of Deadwood back in August, spoke to BLM there where I can pan and I had a lot of fun. 2.73g isn't too bad for a first timer. I...

1 Replies and 2055 Views Question about basic rules for working claims  2055  1 Started by  wgmccarthy99@gmail.com Hey there, I'm a new guy that's excited to work some of the claims around my area and beyond! I remember seeing some sort of list of rules to follow on claims, but can't find it anymore. I also wanted to ask one thing in particular. I went to a claim today and was able to find a high bench up from the river that I wanted to work. Is this allowed I would be taking down buckets to the river to run through my sluice. For some reason I remember reading a rule that sounded like it said I could...

0 Replies and 1942 Views New York Tri-State Area  1942  0 Started by  jgironesr50@gmail.com I have only been prospecting for the last two years and I'm still a greenhorn. I would like to meet up with fellow prospectors/rock hounds to enhance my knowledge, learn better techniques and explore the east coast (mostly my area of New York - Putnam County). I only have limited weekends to enjoy life with peace of mind in this wonderful fashion. Any help, tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. One of my motto's is 'I'd rather be moving a few tons of rock by hand, than do what I do...
