I'm brand new to prospecting and I'm planning to spend 45-60 days this summer touring the western US tent camping and prospecting. I'd like to talk with someone who has a good deal of experience and enjoys imparting their knowledge to newbies. I have tried to get in touch with a couple people locally (in Texas) but I got the impression that my questions were so simple or obvious that I was just a burden. I am a returning member to GPAA after several year of being gone. I revived my GPAA mining guide last week and after reading a few pages I found I have 2 questions.
1) on page MG-3 it says I need to have with me A GPAA prospecting permit, mining guide book and GPAA membership card. I have the book and membership card. Where do I get the GPAA prospecting permit All I plan to do in CA is pan and metal detecting.
2) where do i find out if a clam is still GPAA or someone has pulled the clam ...

When i went to eagle eye claim in black hills couldn't find a GPAA marker only found markers of other claims under kavin or something.

Used to use BLM a map showing the US but not published now. What map gives names and good land marks to look a area over before you go there. It was a good general map and once you located something you could drill down with other maps. I just haven't found a comparable map to it. Thanks

Anyone have tips on paperwork checkoff when buying a claim deed from someone
Seller did the quit claim deed and registered in the county office already.
Just curious if there is anything else to do prior to the 1 Sep deadline for assessment, etc
Also, will the LR2000 not be updated until I file the 1 Sep paperwork

The most important thing to learn when you begin prospecting is how to pan, but you don't know if you are doing it right if your materials have no gold in them. You will have to pan to test a site, and then your final cleanup depends on how well you can pan.
For new prospectors I recommend you buy a bag of concentrates, and not from 'GOLD RUSH'. Watch youtube videos to learn the technique if you don't have somebody to teach you, and then try it out on some concentrates over a tub so you don't ...
