I am a retired Marine who recently moved back to Minnesota and I am interested in prospecting here.  I live in Lake City and would like to find places close to me.  I have read about Nugget Lake in Wisconsin quite a bit, but have not been there yet.  I know about the gold rush on the Zumbro river near Oronoco and that that area is on private land.  I am assuming that prospecting would be better above the dam creating Lake Zumbro, but do not know if there are places for the public to go pan.  Also, I have a couple pans, a stream sluice and a nugget bucket, what can I use in MN and what can I use in Wisconsin?  Any advice is really appreciated.

MN is basically run by the DNR. You're not allowed to do any thing other than pan in the state, and you can not disturb any water ways any more than if you were swimming.... That being said.... F the DNR.. there are areas in the northern part of the state that produce flour gold, but you really need to work for it. I'm talking 10 pieces of 400 micron specs per 5 gallon pail of classified river sand. may not be worth the effort, but it's still a fun past time hobby.
