Headed out this weekend to Kern River west of Lake Isabella.  Does anyone know what the condition of the river is during this drought? Has anyone been to the K-Able site and if so, did you have any success?

Thanks Everyone - this forum is just the most informative and successful forum I have ever been a part of!

Good gold in gulches down river from Isabella. Especially in bedrock cracks at bottom of gulches. Drywasher can be helpful but I think past Chinese miners cleaned up most of the alluvials. You still see their neatly stacked pyramids of cobbles along the Keyesville road. But geologically speaking, very rich gold area. Good hunting!

I'm also heading there. About 1/2 a mile after the power plant. First time so hoping for rocks for my rock hounding son. And gold.

We visited this site on Saturday. We could not locate the markers, but used GPS to locate the claim. Found very little flour gold on south bank at the river under huge boulders. A word of caution: Access to this claim is not for the faint of heart! It is a very steep climb over some huge rocks to reach the river. The river is pretty deep and current strong so we didn't try to cross. Alas, this is a place where dredging would be perfect but getting the equipment to the river would be a challenge.

went to the claim just past the power plant for the first time. the canyon road is so sketchy, people drive so fast, and the turn outs are on blind curves. if you have to use a turn out find one where you can see cars coming from both directions. the claim is cool cuss you can see you car up on the road and you don't have to hike far. the problem is finding the right spot to park on the crazy road, and getting down the steep embankment with all your gear. i went at the beginning of oct. the water was warm and clear, no bugs, lots of fish, a refreshingly healthy river. i was quite surprised and delighted. i took tests from the side of the river, from up on the hill above the river, didn't find anything till i got in the river. i got a few pans in, found a few color, but my queensland heeler pup was going mental, so i had to call it. where i was at the water was pretty deep, you would need to find the right spot to setup a sluice. like Martin mentioned above it would be great for dredging, i didn't notice any tailing piles, just good luck getting your gear down. i will def be going back. it would be a fun place to fish and swim, let alone find some gold.
