Hey All-  Long time lurker seldom poster here...

I tried to do a search but came up with very little so I figure I should just come on out and ask.

Where in the vast collection of data do you all learn to spot these gemstones in the raw?  Does anyone have the "GO TO" guide for field ID?  Anyone you can suggest on Youtube?  A Favored DVD?

I figure I should learn this since the places I end up able to dig I would have better chance in getting a gem than gold.

Thanks in advance for any shared wisdom,

Roy, it is good that you realize there are other things to look for besides just gold. Keep your eyes open for fossils, cutting rock, minerals, ore bodies, relics, artifacts, geodes, etc.

I was a rock hound before getting into gold mining and have many books on this subject. The book I believe that will help you the most is " The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Rocks and Minerals " published in 1978 and has great color photos.

If you are interested in the identification of minerals that are of commercial value ( ore bodies ) then a great book to have is " Introductory Prospecting and Mining " by Leo Mark Anthony, seventh revised edition 1982 University of Alaska.          Ron

Here are a couple of books that are a great help to me. Simon & Schuster's Guide to Gems and Precious Stones and
Simon & Schuster's Guide to Rocks & Minerals many are shown in their natural state and a lot of information. Very good pictures for identifying.

Thanks Guys!  I figure since I'm locked away in Florida for now when I DO get a chance to prospect a bit I should get everything I can.

I hear that. I am in alabama. New to prospecting. My job is digging in the ground everyday. I have found tons of weird looking rocks. No idea what they are. Except tons of quartz. I have bought a few books but a lot of the rocks and minerals look the same. Very confusing.
