Hi everyone me (Don) and my family(Wife, 3 boys and girl) are brand new to prospecting I live here in the Denver metro area. I figure it will be a great way to spend time with the family outdoors and pursue a hobby that's not only exciting but educational also. I found some areas online we are going to try out here around town. I also, cant wait to get the mining claim book and hopefully meet some other people that have the same interest in finding that gold. I was hoping to maybe find someone on here who wouldn't mind maybe sharing some other places to go with me, or maybe even meet up with me and showing me a thing or two. Anyways, I hope to get to know you all a little better as our journey continues. And wish you all the best.

Welcome to the family. There are 3 chapters in Colorado. I recommend hooking up with one of them, they will be having outings where you can see local places to get out and look for gold. The chapter members are always willing to help out newcomers. Also the Denver Gold & Treasure show will be coming in June. The shows are great places to sit in on seminars and pick up that odd peice of equipment you might need.

Welcome to the organization as well, The Western Slope Chapter is primarily based out of Olathe but our members span from Grand Junction to Telluride, and pretty much everything in the region. We are holding many events this year ourselves and would love if you could drop in. I may or may not be able to attend the Denver show but I do believe we have some members of our Chapter attending. The events I can confirm are; The Grand Junction Gem and Rock show on May 7th and 8th. Fund Raiser for Camp Wapiyapi for kids with cancer on May 21st in Delta The Delta Gem and Rock show on June 4th Teaching the kids at Camp Wapiyapi to pan for gold on June 11th and 12th Melon Days, Green River Utah Sept 17th Tentative meeting to teach people how to acquire their own claims for the public on June 16th Tentative Denver Gold Show June 18th Our Chapter is quite involved with the community and would love to see you and your family at one of our events. Benjamin Crain. President, Western Colorado Chapter of the Gold Prospector Association of America I am hoping I am going to get out to the Denver show and get to know some of the people in that chapter but June is going to be a busy month and I can't guarantee it as of yet.

Howdy folks, I am new to GPAA and have a question please. I have a trailer set up for camping and carrying a mule, What I want to do is find a good spot to metal detect and pan. Are we allowed to park our campers on the claim sites? Myself and an old friend are planning a trip soon hopefully in May, neither of us are spring chickens anymore and would like to be able to camp and use the mule to run around and prospect. Any information would be great, I am thinking about Colorado maybe and I'm still waiting on my membership packet and guide book so I'm just trying to get an idea of what's what.. Thanks,( Bullet) Bob Lamberth Montgomery, Alabama

Hi Bob,
Welcome and good luck in your new adventure. Just wondering, is a mule what I am thinking it is or is it something other than an animal?

In answer to your questions, most GPAA claims are on either BLM or USFS managed ground, and as such generally "dispersed" camping is allowed for up to 14 days in one spot. Some National Forests have travel management plans on the books and have "Motor Vehicle Use Maps" showing what routes are open and type of vehicle allowed. These maps are free and available at any Ranger District Office in that Forest. BLM is going to the same type of deal, but as their management plans are being revised. In any case check with the district office in the area you are going to. They can also let you know current conditions and any special closures or fire restrictions in effect at the time you will be there.
