I an truly a greenhorn when it comes to prospecting. I live in AZ and have just joined GPAA. I am curious about dry prospecting since the water sources are very spread out, to say the least, in AZ. I am curious about prospecting on day trips, hiking trips. I am not looking to carry a number of water jugs through the desert to try and run a recirculating sluice. The majority of the trips I want to go on appear to have a few miles of hiking to do so I would prefer to find a panning/prospecting method that I can take in a backpack and still have a chance of finding gold. Any suggestions?

The "Ask Jeff Williams" prospector has lots of desert You Tube videos around NV & AZ. A few videos are back-packing with a dry washer & back-packing with a tub & water, etc. Check those videos out. Watch out for Slim...He's Jeff's talking Skeleton with the gun, cowboy hat, etc.

Go to the Gold Show in Vegas if you get the chance. This past April he was there and had seminars. he even gracious enough after to talk with you and answer questions. He is just as wacky funny in real life as in the video's too. Slim wasn't there though

Your best bet would be a drywasher for running material, you can learn to dry pan as demonstrated in one of jeff Williams YouTube videos but if you can get water for panning you would be better off.

check out all the chapters in AZ, there are a lot and all good at training, if in Mohave county, AZ you may want to make connection with Las Vegas chapter also they go to claims in Mohave frequently. Hands on is always the best but do your homework first with reading and y tube. Jeff Williams and others are good to get acquainted with desert prospecting and mining.

Being new, I would advise you to practice panning with dry cons laced with gold or better yet some lead shot until you get the hang of things concerning panning in a dry environment, Second, plan your trip get as much reference material you can and do check the daily weather reports for temps, possibilities of rain and what types of wildlife are in that specific area. Perhaps get other chapter members who are going and go along. Good Luck
