Well I am back. After months of research, study, planning and preparations... Frankly my first time at "Electronic" Gold Prospecting was everything I had hoped for. I will begin by saying that with my goal of finding a gold nugget or two, I failed. No gold nuggets but I did collect some amazing rocks, I brought back 5 gallons of Gold Basin paydirt and in my collection of rocks I managed to find a handful of gold flake glazed rocks.

I have alot to say and share about my trip, about Gold Basin the GPAA Claims in the days ahead. I vowed to provide as much info and intel as possible for other members who will be visiting our claims in the future. Hopefully what I have to say and share can help other members so be sure the stay tuned. I will include the Claim name that I visited in the title so others can easily find my info and intel when doing a search.

So before I go and conclude (Part 1) I will leave my initial impression. First, if you have never been to a desert gold field, you are in for a very memorable and lasting experience. Just the optics of a real gold field is nothing like you have felt anywhere else. As a "recent" self studying student of geology it's awesome, unlike any place I have ever been... Upon arrival I immediately felt like there was gold everywhere, and at one time, we know there was LOL. On that note, during my previous research I spent so much time learning about the geological conditions and what to look for when gold prospecting and what I didn't expect or consider is a gold field as in the Gold Basin those conditions exist everywhere LOL... From Quartz Outcrops to Contact Zones, from Intrusions to Iron Oxidation, from specific rock types to specific landscapes... There was no major differentiation of geology from one area to the next.

Lastly, for Nugget Shooters the Gold Basin is probably not the great location it once was. There are very few spots that hadn't been touched, previously processed... The Gold Basin has been hammered. Very few rocks haven't been washed and rewashed let alone prosessed for gold... There are holes and tailing piles EVERYWHERE... SO MUCH SO, even in places where there was little logic for digging except at one time, it hadn't been dug before LOL. The Gold Basin is hammered but still an amazing experience and an amazing place. I would say that if you are dry washing or collecting material to process back home, the Gold Basin is perhaps a better location than it is for Nugget Shooting.

In part 2, I will provide some details, from directions in getting to the claims and getting around the claims. I will provide some lessons I learned and perhaps they can be of help for others. I will also at some point be uploading a video of my trip to my YouTube Channel which features a ton of panoramic views which during my research I couldn't find. Until I return, happy thanksgiving everyone!

Awesome, I know desert prospecting and river sluicing are two different things. My experience is the Gold is scattered in the desert, and it's hard to find a vein of Gold. I hope you got some Gold

    Shane,

Glad to hear you made it out and back, and sounds like a good time was had.
Not questioning your geology knowledge, the "gold flake glazed" rock may be fools gold glazed rock
Try to knock a flake off, in a pan try to mash it with something hard, if it shatters ummm its fools gold
If it doesn't shatter, well go find some more of them

    Waiting for part 2

      Wow...how timely!

Can't wait to read it all...I am just about to head out that way myself. :-)

Hey Bill, I really don't think it's pyrite but I wouldn't be the first to be fooled if it is LOL... I am staying in Vegas with family for Thanksgiving and will have to test it when I get home. I may have found the only 5 rocks that hadn't been washed yet haha... Unfortunately I didn't even look for it until after I got back from my days hunt, I didn't know to (rookie mistake). This is perhaps one of many lessons I learned that I will go home and study on it to see what this could tell me in the future when gold prospecting.

Frankly I have been a bit inspired to do some real gold prospecting and see if I can find new gold as I really am not sure where my best chances of finding it would be. Either in a known gold field where lots of gold has been found or in a new field where the geological conditions are good but no known gold has been found. The gold basin is hammered! I mean, hammered. The Topography has actually been greatly altered due to all of the mining and gold prospecting activity over the years. To me it seems like the same dilemma in sports, do we put our bets on the old tired and worn down quarterback who has won a ton of championships before or do we bet on the new guy with all of the skills necessary but has never won a one?

I will continue to go to the Gold Basin... It is an awesome location and such a great place to learn. I am already excited to return. But I will also begin to get out and do some real prospecting as the old timers once did, just with modern equipment... It's just like Treasure Hunting but with a little science involved LOL

    Dave:

I was in your shoes just a week ago, so definitely stay tuned as I am sure I can give you some info and intel that I wish I had had, that I know can help you out there. When do you leave?

    Shane and all hey!
    I leave...well..pretty soon.
Was so proud to be pulling out of the backyard in my 5th wheel that I was singing and dancing, and not noticing that I was pulling the entire back fence down the street, hanging off the sides of my rig.
So the insurance company is going to tell me what to do next. Hoping I can get the work done in Phoenix--it's pretty much all cosmetic.
That way I could scout around a bit in the area to find some good BLM or national forest free camping, while they are working on it.
Very cool that you were just there--thank you for sharing!

My MD rig is not the best for nugget shooting...it's a Fisher F75. Better than a kick in the teeth, but not a specialized gold machine.
Mostly planning on doing some drywashing. Got a Gold Cube too, in case I find a place with more water. And I have a small spiral wheel for cleaning.

Oh yeah! That is my target. Leaving TODAY!!! WOOT!
My plan is to get to the area, and then find one or more series of good BLM camp spots. (or other free dry-camp spots)
I have a big 5th wheel trailer that is now my home, and was planning on moving around between these spots exploring and searching all over that area. It's all set up for solar and boondocking--like a spaceship. So all she needs is a flat spot.
I had picked King Tut Mine as the epicenter of my master plan..but really anything out there works.
Did you have to check in with the BLM office down there? Were there any permits or such that you had to buy?
I have my GPAA membership...my mining guide...not sure if I need another permit or what though...
Plan is to do detecting, drywashing, and meteorite hunting. And retire quietly with my dogs until I have accumulated a legendary fortune, which I will hide for later generations to find!
HAHA...no..I will just spend it. Who am I kidding? :-)
The first problem once I arrive in ...I would assume Prescott...or Meadview...will be to find a place to park the rig. Preferably as close to the claims as possible...
Did you have a camper when you went out there? Anything you know about the area helps me. :-)
    Thanks!

That is awesome! I am so jealous! I wish I was going again... So knowing what I know, which is just a little LOL... But having just been there, if I were to take a trailer, I would find a location very near the Basin... But not in it, and drive out there everyday. It's not that you couldn't find a place or pulling a trailer is impossible, cause it's not. You will see others who have a trailer out there. But based on your recent experience, I would park it at a camp ground or somewhere easier to access or park than pulling it into the basin. I have to get ready for work but I will come back to explain more on it tonight. And no need for permits. Also, you don't need to inform the BLM. You will be good with your membership card although in my 4 days, I never actually ran into anyone. I saw others out there, but nobody within conversation range.

I ended up working all day and didn't get back until too late. I want to help you decide what to do with the camper. I do know that there is a great campsite and I believe with hook-up off of the main highway AZ SR 25, possibly near a couple of our claims in the Lost Basin. I need to look that up though. I would recommend you looking there for a spot and driving into the Basin each day to hunt. Just seems like the safer and more convenient play after having been there.
