Welcome Steven, you're close enough to the San Gabriel Mountains, East Fork River. You'll meet a lot of locals there and they live in the So. Cal. area. The East Fork Prospectors hang out there. And watch the Robert Ferguson you tube videos about Gold prospecting. I think he's from the Corona area.

    Steven,

My advice would be to hook up with a local club.  Some are GPAA, some are not.  They would have the best information on what you can do, where claims are located, etc.  Most clubs I have visited on their web sites or Facebook pages have their own claims that they share with members.  And if you happen to be out and about and see someone mining/prospecting, stop and engage them in conversation to see what they say about what works for them.

The GPAA Gold Shows could be another source to hook up with clubs.

    My 2 cents.

Thanks for the reply's guys. I hope to make it out to the East Fork River one of these days, not too far from where I live. I will be attending my first chapter meeting this coming Thursday to gather more info.

Anyone in the Spokane ,Washington area, who can help two greenhorns find a place for our first panning attempt. My wife and I love gem hunting, and want to try our hand at gold. Not looking to get rich lol. just a good day/weekend of fun. Any gold would be a good bonus though

    Hello Michelle,

I have not been to East Fork yet either in fact I have never been prospecting, I am as green as they get. I have taken the steps to learn the ropes though. I attended my first GPAA Chapter meeting last month at the San Fernando Valley chapter. This month I hope to attend their outing and observe and ask questions to see what I can learn from the more experienced members. Most of the chapters outings are to the southern CA desert where metal detecting and dry washing are the norm. I hope to have an update in about a months time and I am soooooo looking forward to my first outing.

Reporting back after my first prospecting outing.

Went to the Mojave Desert near Randsburg CA this past weekend. Did some metal detecting but only came up with lead.

I brought home 2 5-gallon buckets of dirt that I classified down to 1/4" and ran one of the buckets through a small homemade sluice that some one lent me. After panning the concentrate I was surprised at the amount of black sand that I got and it appeared to have very fine powdery gold in it.

I have the black sand and the powdery gold along with a few specs in a plastic  bottle. Any way to separate the two?  I was thinking of drying the mixture out on the stove and then perhaps using a magnet to remove the back sand. Its probably not worth the time but it was my first trip out prospecting so i kind of want to save whatever I can.  I have no other equipment to use.  Any advice?

    Thanks

Working flour Gold is one of the hardest things to do when it comes to panning. I have two buckets of dredge concentrates that I need to pan, and then will run them through my Black Magic. From what I have see so far the majority is flour with a few flakes and pickers, but the amount of flour will end up being about 2oz when done. What's hard about this run is I have silver, platinum, and gold all in the same concentrates.

Save your black sands, there is gold in them that you just can't see. I always carry two snuffer bottles, a small one to suck up the gold and a large one to suck up black sands.
