Last fall I bought a miner's wheel. I have screened my sand down to 1/8' and run it several times, I still have rocks( not gold) in the cup and in the bottom of the wheel. I hate panning, kills my back and knees. I know there is plenty of Gold in the sand as have seen it. I've used twisters to get a couple of chunks that were just smaller than pickers out. I can't decide to just snif all the black sand and gold then heat the fry pan to get rid of the water, and run a magnet over it to remove the black sand or continue the back breaking process of panning the gold out.

Thinking I bought a gimmick. However, I did the research before purchase, what there was of it. Watched all the video's I could find and it appeared that even after spending 300. you still have to pan the black stuff away from the gold. I watched the video on the Desert Fox at 500. and it said " CLEAN GOLD " but in the video, the back of the machine was never shown during operation. Once it was done the guy pulls out a cup of clean gold from behind the machine but can't prove it was actually the one on the machine while running. it might be worth the money IF THE MACHINE DOES PRODUCE CLEAN GOLD!

THIS appears that it could get to be an expensive hobby, buy the time one gets the metal detector 900 a pointer at 150 the pans, buckets, screens, separator of some sort 300 to 500 and others things one needs to be safe. It goes beyond my budget. Though, I suppose, it is like any hobby. I've been a leather craftsman for the past 50 years and my inventory is 15,000 + so guess it is what it is.

I owned a Desert Fox. It WILL separate black sand from gold. You WILL get just gold in the cup. Not really knowing exactly how you are set up, I would guess you are not washing the concentrates hard enough to push the black sand out as it climbs the wheel. Try a harder water jet. Don't be timid with the water.... you can always mess with the water amounts 'til you get it right. Although the Desert Fox and similar devices replicate the panning procedure, they will NEVER replace your basic panning technique that got you this far in the game. If you're looking for a way around panning, forget it.  ╦╦Ç

Some of the places I poke around have huge amounts of black sand. I watch a lot of videos also and hate to pan black sand for days. I saw the miller table and instantly fell in love. I am a bit of a tinkerer and built my own. I start it at the lowest setting and start pitching it up to increase velocity. I sweep the gold into a pile and snuff it up, that easy... I haven't used any of the wheels but I understand they can be used dry and can capture gems.

When I started out I bought one of those spiral wheels too. In the beginning I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread , then I started panning the tailings and discovered I had gold in the tailings. I tried different angles , water flow ect , very frustrating. Bought a three stack gold cube and viola !! Problem solved , now I use the box the wheel came in as a tool box.

Thanks joseph Loyd. suppose that is true, just have a rough time with shaking hands to get the water to move like it should. Practice, Practice, Practice. huh?

Thanks Brett Whitesides: Guess I'll have a new tool box. The miner's table is a might pricey for me as of yet. Gotta get some yellow in the pan first.

Thanks for all the tips, i'm sure I'll use most of them before I find the gold in the pan, as I know it is there. Your a great bunch of people!

For practice if you can buy some cons from some were and keep running it until you are getting all the gold out .When I give people panning lessons I start them with some lead shot flattened out .When you can keep it you are doing good .And use different size shot.

Check out the “Spin it off” website. This is a great tool for around $130 to remove the magnetic sand from the gold. David is a great guy and his product works really good.
