Always call your local BLM or Forestry department or the claim owner before you start a dig. Even though the BLM and Forestry Department are government agencies and should have the same rules this is not the case. Some Departments make up the rules as they feel and are seriously in violation of the law, but that won't stop them from confiscating your equipment, throw you in jail, and fining you. 3 years later in court and thousands dollars later you might get your equipment back.
This is no joke either, I have seen this happen to many people here in Colorado.
