Not to be a stickler but I have seen first hand some very concerning quality control issues with Kickin Donkey

products. I was optimistic at first  and wanted a cascade highbanker and black magic, but after seeing 2 of my friends purchases from kicking donkey/pro-gold I have changed my mind. I went in with one buddy 3 weeks ago and he dropped almost $400 on a large sluice package and also a black magic. The black magic demo they had in shop you could see the rubber matting peeling up, concerning to me that their display is falling apart. We took the large sluice with spray head home and found in test runs the water flow was very uneven and the way it fit into the sluice poorly allowed the water to flow right back out the top. Being the engineer my friend is, he opted to drill out a few holes to make it work better, also they used round headed screws in the connection of the flange to the sluice at the bottom, which causes water to be diverted at odd angles and not flow properly, again my friend replaced them with flat head screws. He is very displeased with the product. I am fortunate that I got to see the imperfections on his dollar before I decided to buy anything from them.

Of course people make mistakes so the one incident was not the deal breaker for me. I fell in love with the cascade after Travis demo'd it at the GPAP meeting and was sure I wanted to buy one. Shortly after another friend of mine had purchased one as well as a black magic. I went over to test the cascade with him excitedly only to find more flaws in their newest unit, I wonder if they even test these things before selling them. The biggest concern was the 2 rivets holding the punchmetal in the first drop collector, they placed it right in the middle of the highbanker which again diverted the water causing it not to even rinse across the punch plate effectively.

I also had a highbanker made by them that seemed to lack proper water flow even with a 1200gph pump, needless to say I sold it and kept my older highbanker.

Lastly I own an older Pro-Gold drywasher, I actually like this little unit, one flaw I found in it was the screen was cut with rounded corners which allows dirt to slip through small cracks if not manipulated. I brought it into the Wickenburg location approximately 2 months ago and Steve was polite and said he would try to get a replacement. This made me feel good at the time but now 2 months later I have not even been contacted and have even went to the store to follow up 35 miles from my home only to get no answer again even after leaving my contact info a 2nd time. This gives me an overall bad taste in my mouth as to how they treat customers.

I have since decided against buying their product at least until they can get some quality control and improve customer relations

Sadly Travis has great ideas just not thoroughly thought out in my opinion.

I have no agenda here but to inform those looking to purchase product. I felt bad my friends spent so much on sub-par equipment and just wanted to save others the grief. Don't take my word for it, go visit the shop but definitely try each item in store before purchasing, note the matting peeling up from the Black Magic demo and the rivets in the center of the Cascade highbanker that cause irregular flow.

Overall I hope this helps someone make a wise financial investment.

    Good Luck!

P.S. Travis if you are reading this, I hope it opens your eyes to the lack of quality control/customer service you have currently and I hope it gives you ideas to improve upon. I wish you success, but felt that people need to be warned what to expect currently. Hopefully someday you will win back my business.

Interesting that you brought up Kickin Donkey, ProGold Prospecting, and Travis. I had bought the Black Magic Miller Table awhile back. There were some delivery time uncertainties but I contacted Travis and he told me I could pick it up at their Prescott, Arizona branch/shop since I lived not far away. I picked up their Miller Table and when I did so, Travis had told his shop worker to include a very nice rock pick/digger as refund for the shipping fee that I had paid. It was a good deal and Travis was straight up with things and courteous to talk to.

I've used the Black Magic miller table to do some clean up on some very fine black sand cons and flour gold. It does seem to work well though I'm not sure if a chalk painted surface like the green ones would work better or just as well as the plastic/rubber mat that it comes with. The aluminum is quite thin so it flexes easily but once setup properly seems to do the job. It does take a lot of time and at this point I'm a lot faster with a Falcon finishing pan than messing with the Black Magic. Maybe it doesn't do so well with flour gold. I'll keep experimenting.

I'll add to this convo... right after Thanksgiving, my wife ordered for me a highbanker for Christmas. Only had to wait a cupla days and we should have it... the Saturday before the holiday, it still had not arrived. Wife calls them and she's told it should of been here already. Given the gent was away from the shop, he told her he'd call back Monday. On Monday, wife's impatience gets the best of her and she calls them. They say that UPS dont know where the item went, and to boot, there was no tracking number for it... they tell her that another will be shipped FedEx with expected arrival on Tuesday (christmas eve eve). No joy. My wife is still holding out hope and tells me maybe it'll arrive Friday the 26th. No joy. So, she has put in a dispute slip with her credit card issuer. Monday was the last day that my wife or myself has been able to contact kicking donkey. Their 800 number is down and dude doesn't answer the other number either. While I'm bummed that I still do not own a big boy highbanker, I'm flippin' outraged that my wife got jacked for nearly $500. My wife's & I experience with this business has been nothing but terrible. I highly recommend that prospectors avoid this establishment like the plague.

     Sincerely,

For those of you that don't know, Travis is no longer with Kicking Donkey. The owner was at a Roadrunners meeting this month and informed. Sadly, I too have bought equipment from them in the past. I was the very first to buy the large Cascade hopper. I took it out and ran a ton of dirt through it. It had some problems. When I met with Travis to show him the problems, I asked if he would make the same changes to mine. He stated that he didn't do that. So for those of you that have the large Cascade, enjoy. It is designed based off the problems I have with mine.

I'll add my few nuggets to the Kicking Donkey saga. Steve is the new owner of Kicking Donkey. He worked for Travis, and then purchased the business. He is setting up a dealer network for his products. He will be at our GPAA Gold & Treasure shows as well. He is continuing to make improvements to his products as we have the 6 Cascades on Steroids for our Outings hosted at the LDMA camps. I have not used the hopper myself. We use the regular cascades in the Gold Recovery clean-up operation as well.

First off, I don't have a dog in any of the above, but it would be nice to know if either of the guys have/had taken care of the issues brought forth.  I know it would bear on my purchase of equipment were I looking for any more stuff in the near future.  Hopefully they will come on and let everyone know.

One good reference will get you 20 customers, and one bad one will send 20 down the road that you will never get a chance with.  Learned that eons ago in the body shop trade and even more so with mining equipment.

I'll say this; when I approached Steve at the Roadrunners meeting this month and mentioned the hopper to him, he really didn't give me any kind of response that would get me back as a customer. My hopper works as is. But, it would be nice to have the changes made to the one I have. Mainly because I'm the one that road tested the very first one. If I knew it was going to turn out like this I would have kept my suggestions to myself. I'll just sit back and see what the future holds in store for KD.
