Yes.  Look through the other 2 classes of claims (closed and pending).  If you find one you are interested in, take the information for it, (name, owner, TRS), to the county recorder to make sure that is has actually lapsed and that it is not liked on in the county.  BLM will take your $ with no recourse if it turns out it is still filed on or someone beat you to it by a few days.

Have to go to geocommunicator, or other site,  and/or get real good at map reading and GPS translation to get the TRS then start searching by TRS and plotting them out, and look at all 3 options on LR2000.  You might get lucky and find a marker on a tree or post, especially if the possible claim is on a road.  Or a marked claim next door to the area you are looking at.

Others can chime in on maybe some better tips and hints.

    Hi Frankie

You should know the area you want to get a claim in first. Next you look up that area within the geo report and get all the claims in the area you are interested in. Be sure to look at all claims, check out location dates and make sure that the area is not claimed. Just because a claim is abandoned does not mean the area is not already claimed. Don't waist you money. Many people get claims only to find that someone else has already claimed that area. You need to also, as the mining law requires, prospect the area, find a valuable mineral, post a discovery marker with paperwork. Then you can go through the filing procedure including the four physical corner post if required by your state. a lot of work I know..

Here is a link to a website that shows Active and Closed claims . Its $20 for a single state with discounts for multiple states. Its a good starting point.

Make sure you check out the Viewing Tips page for more info and links for verifying a claim's status.

I just pull all information from lr 2000 can look at serial reg page to see before listed as closed if it will be closed. Then it is about two dollars to get the complete old location notice with map, sometimes they email is in PDF for free. Like dealing with the agency direct.  You know where to find old claim markers if they exist and sometimes they put the discovery location also. Lots of info to help when checking claim out to justify the money. just my perspective.
