Check with the rock shop in Hillsboro. The owner has some claims in the area and will allow you access for a fee. Good luck!

The rock shop guys usually hunt for mineral speciments, not gold. If you want to look for mineral speciments, you can do it for free at Rock Hound State Park. They will tell you where they are and identify what you find. They will also tell you the best way to present them. All at no charge. There is a charge if you use the campground there. It is SE of Deming, NM.

Unfortunately Just saw your post.  We are in SE Arizona.  The advice below is good.  Hillsboro is a good area.  Just ask, be polite, check with local chapters.  There are some good spots around White signal by Silver City. 

Monsoons on the AZ, NM area generally occur in late June early July through early September but times can vary. 

If you make another trip send me an email, will get some data together for you.  We have a good river to dredge year round, dry washing, high banking and lots of contacts, only 125 miles east of Hillsboro.
