James, the two most important characteristics of high performance gold prospecting headphones are comfort and decibel output. "Comfort" is highly subjective. Thus I recommend that you try them on before purchase, which admittedly makes it difficult at times. As regards decibel output, the higher the better, meaning that the louder the output, the better you will hear the faint signals from small and/or deep targets. My favorites? Koss UR 29.
