I am looking for places in North Georgia where you can find more than just a few flakes or flour gold. Does anyone know any places where I can find good gold and is free to prospectors like me? Thank you so much! - Randall

Hey Randall, Sorry to say that unless you know someone who can give you access to gold bearing property, there's not many places to go in NO GA. The only legal public places are the creeks around Lake Alatoona on Corp of engineers property (blankets creek, sixes creek, proctor creek, etc), and you cannot acccess them if you have to cross private property, and they are pan and shovel only.

The National Forests in NO GA are listed on their website as legal to pan and shovel, but the problem with that is the GA Dept of Nat resources has designated them as trout streams, therefore putting them off limits. There are good places to go in the northeast corner from helen (owl creek, headwaters of the Chattahoochee, and other creeks in the area) up to clayton ( warwoman creek and sarah's creek and cold mine creek, and others) but you take the risk of being caught by GA DNR.

Gold and Gem grubbin is the only pay to play there is,and they have gotten awfully expensive, they tripled their highbanking and dredging fees this year, $95 a day to highbank. You can join the WEGM (Weekend Gold Miners) they have 2 propertys around cleveland and aurora. It's about $100 to start and $20 a month with a yearly maint fee.

I upgraded from GPAA to LDMA  to have access to 3 more properties here in the SE, I go to the Loud Mine Camp up near cleveland alot ( I can take quests if you'd like to check it out sometime)

I am the outings coordinator of the NW GA chapter of the GPAA at Buchanan,GA we are the SGMA (Southern Gold Miners Assoc) heres the link to our website,http://www.sgma-gpaa.com We have a meeting at the Farm claim on the 2nd sat of the month from Mar-Nov, mining, meeting, pot luck dinner, and raffle. Come on down to our first meeting and compete in the annual speed panning contest, it's free to join and participate.     I live in East Point, if you'd like to join up sometime.    Paul

Sir I was reading this post and I am interested if possible to come out to Georgia to do some prospecting. My question though is can I dredge? I recently purchased a 4” and haven’t been able to find a place to put it in the water yet. I reside in St. Louis missouri and would like to plan a week trip. Having a hard time trying to get her in the water. Really want to take it somewhere where there is good gold. Not just flour gold. Sorry to ask but I’m trying to network and meet new people and places to visit. Looking to go end of June early July. Please let me know if you have any information or can point me in the right direction. Thank you sir for your time.

I just returned from Loud Mine and Gold and Gem Grubbin. Both sites have a very high clay content and you need a high banker with a powerful water pump to break it up. The stream at Gold and Gem Grubbin is very nice and full of gems. I found a few specks of gold and some emeralds and handfuls of garnets.

You have a deal if you tack on the membership transfer which is $30... Send me a message if you are still interested. My membership number is 488. I do not know what number you would be assigned.  I am in good standing with the club with no dues or membership fees owed. You would have to fill out a W.E.G.M. application which I think you can find on the internet or contact the membership director and he can send you one. Fill it out and send it to me. In turn, I would have to write a letter stating who I am selling my membership to and give both to the membership director. I would have to have the money in hand. The club would take it from there. The membership director number is 770-531-9346.  If you chose to buy it from the club up front, the price would be $1750 and $50 maintenance fee yearly after the first year. Or, $100 down and $20 a month plus maintenance until $2000 is paid for the lifetime membership. Have a good day Anthony.

I contacted the Chattooga District of the Chattahoochee NF Ranger Office regarding the “Designated Trout Stream” issue. The NFS website states that all NFS streams and rivers are open to gold panning, even those with Designated Trout Stream status (which is ALL of the North Georgia waterways), with a few specific restrictions.
Private property is of course strictly off limits, unless you own it, or have permission from the owners (better have this in writing to avoid local law enforcement entanglement). In Georgia, property lines based on waterways are to the center of the current channel, so which side you are on can matter.
Any stream in a Wilderness Area, National Scenic River Corridor, or other specially protected area is off limits. Same for State Park land, and presumably any county, city, or other local government park lands.
Any other stream can be panned only in the following manner- in stream beds only (no banks), using only a small hand shovel (by this they mean a trowel or prospecting scoop) and a pan (no sluices, no suction, no buckets), and with minimal stream bed disturbance (meaning no big holes, no trenches, no moving around larger rocks, no movement of bedrock).
These are quotes from the discussion I had on Monday, 27 December 2021 with a staff member at the office who called me back regarding an inquiry I submitted.
Subject to change without notice, individual DNR Ranger or other LE Officer interpretation, and should not be taken as legal advice or gospel truth. 🤠⛏💎
